UPDATED: Four potential early trade candidates to bolster the Packers roster before to the deadline

The NFL trade deadline often passes with many big names mentioned in rumors, but actual trades are rare. However, each year brings unpredictability, and if teams are eager to make moves, anything can happen. Could the Green Bay Packers be inclined to pursue trades to enhance their chances in the highly competitive NFC North?

With their franchise quarterback secured and a wealth of young talent on the roster, the Packers could benefit from finding some affordable assistance before the trade deadline. But who could be potential targets?

While a reunion with Davante Adams seems unlikely, let’s explore a few trade possibilities that Packers GM Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur should consider.

Realistic targets for the Packers before the 2024 trade deadline

1. Devin White, LB, Eagles

Former first-round pick Devin White has fallen out of favor with both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who let him leave in free agency this offseason, and the Philadelphia Eagles, who signed him to a one-year, $4 million contract. It’s a strange situation for White, as he once seemed poised to become one of the league’s top all-around linebackers.

For some reason, he hasn’t been active this season and doesn’t seem to fit into the plans of Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. However, he could be a valuable addition for the Packers without requiring a significant investment in terms of assets or salary.

If the Packers are interested in taking a chance on a former top-10 draft pick and trying to revive his career, now might be the right moment to act.

2. Haason Reddick, EDGE, Jets

Speaking of former first-round picks not contributing to their new teams, Haason Reddick, the former Eagles pass rusher currently holding out with the New York Jets, is taking a firm stand this offseason. Reddick sought a trade from Philadelphia to join a team willing to pay him, and he seemingly believed the Jets would fulfill that promise.

However, that hasn’t materialized, and he hasn’t reported to play for them. Reddick’s firm stance suggests that any potential trade for him would come with the expectation of a substantial contract. This could deter the Packers from pursuing him, but in today’s NFL, having multiple strong pass rushers is essential. The Packers might consider investing in the versatile Reddick, who can effectively rush the edge or play off the ball, generating significant quarterback pressures and hits.

With Rashan Gary struggling at the start of the season, bringing in a player like Reddick could significantly enhance the Packers’ pass rush.

3. James Bradberry, CB, Eagles

If the Packers are considering a budget-friendly option at cornerback, James Bradberry could be a viable target.

Bradberry had a rough year with the Eagles last season, allowing a staggering 11 touchdowns. While that’s not the most appealing reason to trade for him, there are a few factors to consider.

Firstly, Bradberry has a track record of high-level performance at the position, and that wasn’t too long ago. Secondly, players often thrive in new environments, even if it’s just temporarily. A trade to Green Bay could provide him with a fresh start, and the Packers might only need to swap a late-round pick to acquire him.

4. Damarri Mathis, CB, Broncos

Acquiring Damarri Mathis from the Denver Broncos might require the Packers to part with a bit more in draft compensation, but he currently has limited opportunities for playing time in Denver unless there’s an injury. With Pat Surtain II as the top cornerback and two other young talents, Riley Moss and Ja’Quan McMillian, emerging in the lineup, Mathis’s path to the field is blocked.

Recently coming off injured reserve, Mathis was a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Packers could potentially land a young, cost-effective player for a later-round pick and work on developing him under Jeff Hafley.
