The Boston Red Sox were active during the trade deadline, but things didn’t pan out as hoped.
They aimed to strengthen their roster to secure a playoff spot and made several moves. While some were solid, the team ultimately fell short and missed the postseason.
With the 2024 MLB regular season now concluded, Boston finished with an 81-81 record and must take a close look at its roster as free agency approaches. Speculation is already swirling about potential departures and returns. One player who “definitely” won’t return is trade acquisition Danny Jansen, according to FanSided’s Zach Pressnell.
Boston acquired Danny Jansen to enhance their catching depth as they aimed for a playoff run,” Pressnell noted. “However, he hasn’t contributed positively for the Red Sox…
“It’s unlikely they will actively pursue the veteran catcher in free agency, as better options will be available. Meanwhile, the future catcher for Boston is already in their system. Kyle Teel, just 22, has excelled in Triple-A, posting a .288/.386/.433 line with 36 extra-base hits and 12 stolen bases. He’s a consensus top-three prospect in the organization and is expected to make his big-league debut early in the 2025 season.”
Given Jansen’s struggles at the plate and Teel’s impending arrival, it seems unlikely that their partnership will continue.
