The Red Sox will see changes in their coaching staff for 2025.
First base coach Andy Fox, bullpen coach Kevin Walker, assistant hitting coach Luis Ortiz, mental skills coach Rey Fuentes, and bullpen catcher/coach Mani Martinez will not be back, according to multiple sources. Additionally, strength and conditioning coach Ben Chadwick is also leaving.
These changes were initially reported by Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. During the team’s end-of-season press conference, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow mentioned that the coaching staff would be evaluated in upcoming meetings.
Key members of the staff, including pitching coach Andrew Bailey, hitting coach Pete Fatse, third base coach/outfield and baserunning instructor Kyle Hudson, game planning coordinator/catching instructor Jason Varitek, and bench coach Ramón Vázquez, are expected to return in 2025, along with assistant hitting coach Ben Rosenthal, as confirmed by an industry source.
Fox was promoted to first base coach this past season. He’d previously spent time as Boston’s field coordinator. Fox had been in the organization for more than a decade. He played parts of nine seasons in the big leagues as a utility infielder, spending the bulk of that time with the Diamondbacks and Marlins.
Fox had been part of the organization for 14 years. The 2024 season was his third on the major league staff. As the team’s infield instructor, Fox may have paid the price for the team’s frequently sloppy infield defense. As a team, the Red Sox allowed the most unearned runs in either league.
Ortiz just completed his 10th season as a major league coach and third with the Sox.
Walker had spent 16 seasons with the Red Sox and fifth on the major league coaching staff, for which he served as assistant pitching coach and bullpen coach.
