Scott Kingery’s tenure with the Philadelphia Phillies has come to an end after nearly ten years in the organization. The Phillies traded him to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday in exchange for cash considerations.
At 30 years old, Kingery last played in the majors with the Phillies in 2022. The former top prospect has primarily spent the last four seasons with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate.
Last year, Kingery posted a batting line of .268/.316/.488, hitting 25 home runs and driving in 67 runs for the IronPigs.
The Phillies selected Kingery in the second round of the 2015 MLB Draft from the University of Arizona. He eventually became the team’s top prospect and signed a six-year contract in 2018 before making his major league debut.
Invited to spring training in 2018, Kingery performed well enough to secure a spot on the opening-day roster. However, he struggled in his rookie season, hitting .226 with a .605 OPS and striking out 126 times in 147 games, as he was utilized in various positions rather than his natural second base role.
In 2019, Kingery was slightly improved — .788 OPS and 101 OPS+ in 126 games — but COVID-19 and injuries derailed the 2020-shortened season. Kingery hit .159 with 35 strikeouts in 36 games in 2020.
Kingery struggled in spring training in 2021, and the Phils sent him to Triple-A. He played in 15 games for the Phillies in 2021 and then one in 2022.
