There are still many positive aspects about the Boston Red Sox despite the team’s failure to earn a postseason position.
Boston advanced a step. With an 81-81 record at the end, the Red Sox outperformed each of the previous two campaigns. The fact that Boston was still able to accomplish this in spite of a few serious injuries only serves to highlight how outstanding this is.
Due to injury, Boston once had two outfielders, two starting pitchers, and three of their four starting infielders out of the game. Boston pulled through and remained competitive the entire season. It wasn’t until the last series of the season that the Red Sox were eliminated from the postseason.
Boston is quickly gaining ground on rival teams in the American League and currently has additional offensive potential on its way from the minor leagues to the majors. The Red Sox have a great chance to make the playoffs the following season, but it will require some calculated additions this winter.
The Red Sox require two-time and one additional starting pitchers. The Cy Young Award Blake Snell might be the team’s quickest route to the postseason. Snell is among baseball’s top pitchers. Despite joining the San Francisco Giants late, he had trouble this season right out of the start but has since been unstoppable. Since returning to health, Snell has made 14 starts and recorded a 1.23 ERA.
This offseason, Snell is expected to sign a $172 million contract, so the Red Sox should have that choice. His left hand is just what Boston sorely needs. Furthermore, he will be far less expensive than someone like Corbin Burnes.
Snell’s signing would provide the Red Sox with another ace and enough cash to potentially add another right-handed bat. There wouldn’t be much money left over if the Red Sox signed Burnes. They would reach new heights under Snell, and there would be room for maneuver.
Boston is right there. The team has many positive aspects, but there aren’t enough prospects in the minors to make the starting lineup. The Red Sox need one if they hope to compete.
