OFFICIAL: Capital One Has Announced The Player Who Will Represent The Detroit Tigers In The 2024 Roberto Clemente Award

The Roberto Clemente Award, sponsored by Capital One, annually honors a Major League Baseball player who exemplifies the spirit of the game through exceptional character, community service, philanthropy, and positive impact both on and off the field.

Each MLB team nominates one player for this prestigious award, celebrating Roberto Clemente’s legacy and values.

This year, Tarik Skubal and his wife, Jessica, have made a generous contribution to Alternatives for Girls, an organization dedicated to empowering homeless and at-risk young women through crucial support and intervention. Their donation primarily aids survivors of domestic violence in the Metro Detroit area by supporting Alternatives for Girls’ new housing initiative, Dr. Maya Angelou Village.

Sunday, September 15th is Roberto Clemente Day, presented by Capital One. This annual event, created by Major League Baseball, honors Clemente’s humanitarian legacy and formally recognizes the nominees for the Roberto Clemente Award. Celebrations will include the Roberto Clemente Day logo on bases and dugout lineup cards, and a special tribute video featuring Clemente and the 30 nominees will be shown across all MLB ballparks, as well as on MLB Network, MLB.com, MLB.tv, team websites, and MLB’s social media platforms.

Known as the “Commissioner’s Award,” the idea of rewarding Major League players for their charitable endeavors was conceived in 1971. In 1973, the award was renamed the “Roberto Clemente Award” in honor of Clemente, who his away on December 31, 1972, in Nicaragua while giving supplies to earthquake victims.
