OFFICIA: Broncos bring in $33 million free agent linebacker to practice squad

The Denver Broncos are considering their options in free agency with the goal of strengthening the team’s depth at linebacker.

Starting with core special team member Justin Strnad, they have Alex Singleton and Cody Barton. Kristian Welch, who is also primarily a special team member, is in reserve. Due to an Achilles injury, Drew Sanders, a third-round selection in 2023, is listed as physically unable to perform (PUP).

Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 wrote on X on September 24 that the “#Broncos worked out Kwon Alexander.”

 

 

 

Kwon Alexander, 30, is seeking to play in his 10th NFL season, as reported by 9News’ Mike Klis on X on September 24. He has started for teams including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints (under Broncos head coach Sean Payton in 2020-21), New York Jets, and Pittsburgh Steelers. After tearing his Achilles last November, he is expected to be ready for the upcoming season.

Drafted in the fourth round by the Buccaneers in 2015, Alexander played four seasons there and made the Pro Bowl in 2017. He signed with the 49ers in 2019 but was traded to the Saints the following year.

With a career earnings of $33.8 million, he was on a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the Steelers, making him a potential cost-effective addition for a new team. Besides the Broncos, he has recently had workouts with the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings.
