The Washington Commanders are dealing with quarterback injury concerns. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels sustained a left rib injury in the first quarter of their game against the Carolina Panthers, causing him to exit the game and head to the locker room.
On Monday, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn provided an update on Daniels’ condition.
“The status for Jayden is week to week,” Quinn said. “We’ll put him through all the steps in practice, monitor his progress, and make sure to proceed with caution. We’re hopeful he can play, but we’ll prioritize his well-being.” Quinn also noted that Daniels hasn’t been ruled out for Week 8’s matchup against the Chicago Bears, emphasizing they’ll evaluate him day by day.
Daniels suffered the rib injury during Washington’s dominant 40-7 win over Carolina. Initially deemed questionable to return, he was later downgraded to out. After leading an 85-yard drive that ended with a field goal, Daniels walked off the field in visible discomfort. He was briefly assessed in the medical tent, attempted some throws on the sideline, but was eventually escorted to the locker room.
Veteran Marcus Mariota stepped in for Daniels, with the Commanders leading 10-0. Washington extended the lead to 27-0 by halftime. Daniels reappeared on the sideline in sweats during the second half, smiling and waving to fans as the team maintained its lead.
At the time of his injury, Daniels had completed 2 of 2 passes for six yards and rushed for 50 yards. So far this season, Daniels has recorded 1,410 passing yards, six touchdowns, two interceptions, 372 rushing yards, and four rushing touchdowns. He currently leads the NFL with a 75.6% completion rate and a 107 passer rating among rookies.
