The agent for Jeremy Swayman isn’t having it. Lewis Gross quickly blasted Cam Neely and the Boston Bruins for what he called a disappointing turn of events, claiming that Swayman was not even approached with an offer that came close to $64 million. He indicates that after some time, he and his client will decide where to go.
He mentioned the following in the statement:
I don’t typically talk about negotiations or make announcements to the media. But in this instance, I believe I must stand up for my client. “$64 million was mentioned at today’s press conference,” he continues. We had never addressed that figure in our negotiations before. No offer to that extent was made prior to the press briefing.
He continued by saying that this was unfair to Jeremy and that they are deeply disappointed. It was perceived as casting Swayman in a negative light, as if he had rejected a decent offer and was now receiving criticism from the supporters.
It’s unclear if that implies Swayman would have taken that offer. And will Swayman take the $64 million offer from the Bruins right now? Or is this simply another example of how the Bruins have gone after their goalie directly, after first subjecting him to a difficult arbitration procedure?
Neely told the media that he wouldn’t comment on Swayman’s question, but that he had “64 million reasons why I’d be playing right now” and that their goalie ought to be at camp getting ready for the upcoming campaign. The Bruins reportedly made Swayman an eight-year contract worth $8 million a season. According to Gross, that is wholly untrue. It’s unclear if there was simply a misunderstanding or if Neely is brazenly lying to everyone about what they’ve offered.
Earlier on Monday, Spittin’ Chiclets’ Paul Bissonette wrote, “This Swayman stuffs is about to pop.” He would be wonderful in Detroit. I hear Swayman’s agent is about to make a statement. Prepare the popcorn. NHL season is off to an AMAZING beginning. He got it right when he said that a statement had been released, but who knows whether there is more to the Detroit part?
