just in: Fans joking about extra-innings blunder vs. Guardians

Fans on X expressed their displeasure with Juan Soto after the New York Yankees star missed a key play late in his team’s game against the Cleveland Guardians.

With the score tied 3-3, the Yankees and Guardians went into extra innings at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y.

Following two more scoreless innings, Cleveland began to find their rhythm in the top of the 12th. They scored two runs to take a 5-3 lead and then loaded the bases with only one out.

Guardians hitter David Fry sent a seemingly harmless fly ball toward Soto in right field. Soto made a diving attempt to catch the ball but fell short.

Several fans ridiculed Soto on social media by sharing the play and sarcastically claiming that Soto had made an amazing catch for the Yankees. Some even suggested it was worthy of a Gold Glove award.

Fans of Soto who were hoping to see the Yankees outfielder deliver a standout defensive play were likely disappointed by the online sarcasm.

The Guardians added another run, widening their lead to 9-3 as they entered the bottom of the 12th inning.

The Yankees were able to score two runs but fell far short of a dramatic comeback.
