Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams is no longer meeting expectations, and it’s time for a significant overhaul in the RB position. He hasn’t averaged four yards per carry in nearly a year, with just 52 yards on 24 carries this season, equating to a mere 2.2 yards per carry.
It’s hard to justify giving him more opportunities after a critical fumble during a key drive, which shifted the game’s momentum and allowed the Buccaneers to score. Had the Broncos lost, that fumble would likely have been seen as the pivotal moment.
Backup RB Tyler Badie had a standout performance, rushing for 70 yards on just nine carries, consistently making impactful plays despite limited touches. Unfortunately, rookie RB Audric Estime is on injured reserve, complicating any effort to remove Williams from the rotation, but a change is necessary. Williams, a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, showed promise in his rookie season, but a knee injury in 2022 seems to still hinder his performance. With Estime drafted in 2024 and Williams set to be a free agent after the season, it’s clear he doesn’t fit into the team’s future plans.
Realistically, Williams has struggled as a running back for the past year. Both Tyler Badie and Jaleel McLaughlin are far more dynamic, and it’s likely Estime could perform better as a rookie than Williams currently does.
Javonte Williams has been a significant disappointment during George Paton’s tenure, representing a poor investment of a high draft pick that has pushed the Broncos to seek other options for RB production. With his performance hovering closer to two yards per carry, he cannot be part of the Broncos’ future at running back.
