New York Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. recently mentioned on Instagram that he feels healthy enough to play, but he needs to wait until his 10-day injured list stint is over. However, during an interview on the Talkin’ Yanks podcast on Tuesday, manager Aaron Boone suggested that this timeline might be a bit optimistic.
Aaron Boone mentioned that it’s encouraging that Jazz Chisholm Jr. feels ready to return within the minimum 10-day period after being placed on the IL with a UCL injury. Meanwhile, players such as Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza, and DJ LeMahieu are seeing increased playing time for the Yankees.
Chisholm sustained the elbow injury around a week ago during a game against the Chicago White Sox while sliding home to score. He exited the game that night and was placed on the IL in the days that followed. Initially, there was concern that the UCL injury might require Tommy John surgery, potentially sidelining him for the rest of the season. However, it now appears he might avoid that fate, and there is hope he could be back in the next few weeks.
How will Yankees handle Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s absence and eventual return?
When Chisholm makes his return to the Yankees, he is expected to resume his role as the starting third baseman. Although he had not previously played third base before joining New York, he has performed well in the position. Offensively, Chisholm has thrived with the Yankees, boasting a .316 batting average, a .361 on-base percentage, and a 1.062 OPS, along with seven home runs in 14 games, according to Baseball Reference.
Upon his return to the Yankees, Chisholm is anticipated to take back his role as the starting third baseman. Despite not having played third base before his trade to New York, he has excelled in the position. Offensively, Chisholm has been impressive, hitting .316 with a .361 on-base percentage and a 1.062 OPS, and has already slugged seven home runs in 14 games, as reported by Baseball Reference.
For the most part, Cabrera and Peraza will be covering third base based on the opposing pitcher. Cabrera is expected to start against right-handed pitchers, while Peraza will likely play against lefties. The Yankees have had significant difficulties with left-handed pitching this season, so it would be beneficial if Peraza can contribute offensively in this role.
The Yankees are set to begin a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday in the Bronx. With left-hander Matthew Boyd pitching for Cleveland, Peraza is expected to be in the lineup. The Yankees are hopeful that Chisholm will return relatively soon.
