Indiana WR Donaven McCulley commits to Michigan out of the transfer portal

#PortalSZN is off to a strong start for Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines, as they have secured former Indiana wide receiver Donaven McCulley from the transfer portal.

After Michigan claimed their fourth consecutive victory in The Game, McCulley visited Ann Arbor shortly after the team returned from Columbus. On3 analysts Steve Wiltfong and Pete Nakos quickly predicted McCulley would join the Wolverines following the rivalry win.

However, the recruitment process was far from straightforward. Oklahoma made a strong push during McCulley’s visit, creating serious competition for Michigan, while Virginia Tech also emerged as a significant contender.

McCulley spent the past four seasons with Indiana. In his junior year, the 6-foot-5, 195-pound wideout led the Hoosiers with 48 receptions, 644 receiving yards, and six touchdowns. Unfortunately, he suffered an upper-body injury in the season opener against FIU this year and entered the transfer portal in October.

Though McCulley played little role in Indiana’s impressive resurgence this season, his talent is undeniable, and Michigan’s receiving corps could benefit greatly from his skill set.

After a productive 2023 season, McCulley appears poised to step in as Michigan’s potential No. 1 receiver if he can stay healthy. He joins a group of solid contributors, including Semaj Morgan, Frederick Moore, and Kendrick Bell, though none have solidified themselves as a clear top option, especially with tight end Colston Loveland heading to the NFL.

The Wolverines will also welcome three incoming freshman receivers: four-stars Andrew Marsh and Jacob Washington, and three-star Jamar Browder, adding depth to the room.

McCulley is likely just the first of many players Michigan will add through the transfer portal this December. Stay tuned to Maize n Brew for updates during what promises to be an eventful portal season in Ann Arbor.
