EXCLUSIVE: There Is Doubt About Player’s Short Term Future With The Blue Jays

It is anticipated that Bo Bichette will return to the Blue Jays in Texas in time for the Rangers game on Tuesday.

A player of Bichette’s caliber returning should be celebrated, even if he is performing much below his potential due to injury.

And it will be in a lot of places. However, there are also a lot of uncomfortable questions involved.

Bichette has been at the root of part of that.

The futures of two of the organization’s rising stars are the unanswered question.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who is having an MVP-caliber season, and Bo Bichette are both key players who the team is considering locking down for the long term. However, unlike Bichette, Guerrero has shown little interest in leaving Toronto, making it highly likely that he will receive an extension this off-season.

Additionally, Guerrero has been relatively healthy, with only occasional wrist or hand issues from errant pitches. This doesn’t mean Bichette won’t also be a candidate for an extension, but Guerrero’s extension seems more imminent at the moment.

Both players are under team control for at least another season. Bichette is entering the last year of a three-year contract worth $17,583,333 for 2025, while Guerrero is finishing up a one-year $19.9-million deal and has one more year of arbitration before potentially becoming a free agent. Guerrero is also a year younger than Bichette.

Several factors contribute to Guerrero’s priority for an extension over Bichette, many of which are evident from their current performance statistics.
