Tarik Skubal, the Detroit Tigers’ ace pitcher, caused concern among fans and management when he took a line drive to his non-throwing hand during a game against the Colorado Rockies. The injury happened in the sixth inning, when Skubal, who was pitching effectively, made a barehanded catch after being hit on his glove wrist. Despite the injury, he completed the inning but was removed from the game after just 84 pitches, his lowest count since June 19. The Tigers lost the game 4-2, with the Rockies scoring three runs late in the game.
After the game, Skubal expressed relief following an X-ray that showed no fractures. He commented, “It’s a little sore, but I think I’m fine,” offering some reassurance during a crucial playoff push. This season, Skubal has posted impressive stats: a 16-4 record, a 2.50 ERA, and 214 strikeouts, making him a strong contender for the American League Cy Young Award. Losing Skubal could be a major setback for the Tigers, who are 3.5 games behind in the AL Wild Card race with only 15 games remaining in the season.
Skubal’s condition is crucial as he is scheduled to start against the Kansas City Royals on September 17. His performance in this late-season stretch will be pivotal for the Tigers’ playoff hopes, as they aim to secure their first postseason appearance in several years.
