The Green Bay Packers may be experiencing a sense of déjà vu early in the season after kicker Brayden Narveson’s performance in Week 4’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
The rookie kicker missed both a 37-yard and a 49-yard field goal in the first half, raising concerns as this trend has continued over the first four games. Despite this, head coach Matt LaFleur has consistently supported Narveson.
However, the Packers’ front office appears less certain, as they are exploring other options available in the market.
As reported by ESPN’s Field Yates, the Packers brought in four players for workouts on Tuesday, including kickers Chad Ryland and Lucas Havirsik.
For my Packers followers who normally get their news from the great (and currently locked out) @RobDemovsky: the team worked out four players today

The New England Patriots released Chad Ryland before the August 53-man roster deadline after he lost the training camp competition to veteran Joey Slye. Ryland had a difficult rookie season, making only 16 of 25 field goals (64%), although he was more reliable with extra points, converting 24 of 25. He particularly struggled on kicks from 40 to 49 yards, hitting just 5 of 10, and was 2 of 4 on attempts from over 50 yards.
Lucas Havirsik, on the other hand, was waived by the Cleveland Browns before the roster deadline. The 25-year-old kicker played for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023, successfully converting 15 of 20 field goals (75%) and 19 of 22 extra points. However, he also faced challenges, making only 2 of 6 field goals from 40 to 49 yards last season.
Green Bay was aware of the difficulties both kickers faced before bringing them in for a workout, but this move sends a subtle message to Narveson, who needs to perform better in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams.
