Roman Anthony is the most highly regarded prospect in all of baseball.
On Wednesday, Baseball America’s prospect rankings saw the star-studded Boston Red Sox prospect rise to the top. The 20-year-old outfielder, who was brought up to Triple-A Worcester precisely one month ago, was undoubtedly the subject of even more attention after that.
However, the question now is when Anthony will give up the No. 1 overall prospect ranking and sign with the Red Sox, even if he just received it.
On Thursday’s episode of NESN’s “Boston Has Entered The Chat podcast, George Balekji and Annabelle Hasselbeck talked about when Anthony might don a Red Sox uniform and make his Major League Baseball debut.
Before he is 21, he might already be in the big. We’ll see, remarked Balekji. His estimated time of arrival, if you go to several prospect websites, is 2025, however it might vary from early to late. This season, a few guys weren’t there when they were supposed to be. All you need is for the time to be perfect when you acquire him. Just for the Red Sox, it’s huge news.
Since Anthony won’t turn 21 until May 13 of the following year, the Red Sox are able to hold off on adding him to the Opening Day roster in 2025 and instead give him an early-season call-up as a birthday present.
However, it seems safe to assume that Anthony will play for the Red Sox at some point in the upcoming campaign. With 26 games under his belt with Worcester, he is raking in a solid.337 with three home runs, 14 RBIs, and three stolen bases. In addition, he has struck out 23 times and walked 16 times.
Finding space in the outfield for Anthony is the only obstacle standing in the way of the Red Sox elevating him to the major leagues. There won’t be an opening in the outfield for Anthony if Tyler O’Neill, a pending free agent, returns. Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu are expected to occupy two of the three places next season.
