BREAKING: Rangers Considering $10.25-10.75 Million Offer Sheet To Star Next Offseason

After losing in the Eastern Conference Final the previous season, the New York Rangers are anticipated to have a deep playoff run this year. Rangers supporters considered their season a success even if they were not able to win the Stanley Cup, as they were awarded the Presidents’ Trophy for having the greatest regular season record. The Rangers chose not to pursue any high-profile free agents and instead kept their roster as close to the one from the previous season as possible. Free agency is often a time for clubs to go out and make a splash to strengthen their squad. Although there were whispers that they were attempting to get rid of Jacob Trouba and his enormous contract, nothing materialized.

While many NHL teams grapple with goaltending stability, the Rangers are fortunate to have Igor Shesterkin consistently proving himself as a top-tier goalie each season. However, their concern lies in their defensive depth on the right side of the blue line. Quality right-handed defensemen are scarce, as demonstrated by the Edmonton Oilers’ recent difficulties, and the Rangers could benefit from a significant upgrade. Although their current depth chart is solid, adding a standout player could be advantageous, especially if they consider trading Jacob Trouba.

Evan Bouchard is the crucial 'third wheel' in Oilers' Stanley Cup mission

One potential target could be Evan Bouchard, who might receive an offer sheet after a strong couple of seasons with the Oilers. Despite no indications of a breakdown in extension talks, the Oilers will need to offer a substantial contract to keep him long-term, which could prolong negotiations. If Bouchard becomes a restricted free agent (RFA) and hits the open market, the Rangers should think about making him an offer sheet. If they manage to trade Trouba and free up some cap space, they should be prepared to invest in enhancing their top-four defensemen.

Bouchard Has Norris Trophy Future Ahead of Him, Rangers Should Pay

It’s not unreasonable to think that Bouchard could contend for a Norris Trophy in his career. Although competing with stars like Cale Makar, Adam Fox, and Miro Heiskanen will be challenging every year, his offensive performance last season suggests he might be ready to elevate his game further. For the Rangers, acquiring a top-tier player like Bouchard, who can score over a point per game, would be a worthwhile investment. While a substantial seven-year deal could be costly and challenging to lure him away from the Oilers, the Rangers should consider using their available cap space to pursue him.

A player of Bouchard’s caliber rarely becomes available, even as a restricted free agent. If the Rangers can’t secure a deal this season and find themselves in the same position next summer, targeting Bouchard should be their top priority. He would be an ideal replacement for Trouba and could potentially form one of the best defensive units in the NH.

Unfortunately, the Rangers will now have to pay a high price. Though it’s realistic that the Oilers are asking more for him than Darnell Nurse’s $9.25 million yearly compensation, they will undoubtedly make an effort to negotiate. The Rangers would need to pay him at least $10.25–10.75 million a year and forfeit two first-round, two second-round, and three third-round picks in exchange for him. But he is worthwhile.

Bouchard is still a great asset to the Oilers and has become better defensively every season. The Rangers may be able to overcome their current slump and win a championship by acquiring a top player like Bouchard, if they wish to challenge for their first Stanley Cup since 1994.
