After Isiah Pacheco suffered a broken fibula in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Kansas City Chiefs bolstered their 53-man roster by adding Kareem Hunt to the practice squad last week.
Hunt joins a backfield led by rookie Carson Steele and former Bengals player Samaje Perine, quickly positioning himself as a top contender for the starting running back spot. However, with just eight days on the roster and having previously played under Eric Bieniemy, it may take time for him to regain the form that saw him lead the league in rushing in 2017.
That said, Hunt has proven himself successful in various situations, adapting to different quarterbacks, coaches, and offensive lines. With the Chiefs’ strong offensive line, a skilled offensive coordinator, and the league’s top quarterback to create opportunities, there’s a good chance he could make a significant impact in Kansas City’s system.
Originally drafted in the third round from Toledo, Hunt has averaged just 457 yards per season over his five years with the Browns. While this can be attributed in part to sharing carries with Nick Chubb, his yards per carry also decreased, dropping from 4.7 in Kansas City to 4.0 in Cleveland. It remains to be seen if he can handle a larger role with the Chiefs until Pacheco returns later this season, but his addition is a low-risk investment that general manager Brett Veach made by bringing him back.
