The Miami Dolphins’ 28-27 loss to the Arizona Cardinals spoiled Tua Tagovailoa’s return from injury, and if safety Jevon Holland had suffered a severe injury, it would have compounded their troubles. Fortunately, Holland appears to have avoided a significant setback; head coach Mike McDaniel, via Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, reported that Holland is unlikely to miss extended time or require knee surgery. In fact, Holland may even suit up for Week 9 against the Buffalo Bills, although the team will monitor his knee throughout the week before a final call is made.
Holland sat out Week 7 due to a broken bone in his hand but returned in Week 8, only to exit before halftime with a knee issue. Despite these setbacks, McDaniel remains hopeful that Holland will make a swift recovery. At 2-5, Miami could certainly use his defensive presence.
While his injuries have slightly impacted his performance, Holland has recorded 26 tackles, defended two passes, and forced a fumble this season. Though he holds a 60.8 overall grade, his strong 77.1 Pro Football Focus grade for run defense stands out. Miami’s run defense ranks 16th in the NFL, allowing 123.7 yards per game, while their overall defense ranks seventh, giving up 300 YPG. As the Dolphins aim for a comeback, both Tagovailoa’s health and their defensive strength will be essential.
Miami’s confidence would get a boost with Holland on the field. Since joining in 2021, he has logged 265 tackles, 23 pass breakups, and five interceptions. Holland’s knee progress will be key, but for now, the Dolphins are feeling optimistic about his return.
