The Boston Red Sox appear determined to make a major push this winter. After falling short of delivering on last year’s “full throttle” offseason promises, the front office is now focused on adding top-tier talent to help the team return to the postseason. According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe there’s a general sense at the GM Meetings that the Red Sox are in a position to trade for almost anyone, with White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet being the top target.
There are strong reasons why Crochet is considered the most enticing trade option for Boston this winter. The 23-year-old made his first All-Star team this year after racking up 209 strikeouts in his debut season as a starter. With his current team, the White Sox, in the midst of a major rebuild, Crochet is likely available for trade.
Cody Williams of Fan Sided proposed a major trade package involving Wilyer Abreu, Kutter Crawford, Franklin Arias, and David Sandlin in exchange for Crochet. Williams noted that the combination of Abreu and Crawford would be particularly appealing to Chicago. Crawford, 28, has shown he can contribute at the major league level, with a solid 4.36 ERA and 1.112 WHIP in 33 starts for the Red Sox. Meanwhile, Abreu could be the key piece that makes the deal work.
While Boston would part with valuable contributors like Crawford and Abreu, this trade would allow them to keep their top four prospects—Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell, and Kyle Teel—intact. This gives the Red Sox a chance to acquire a top-tier arm like Crochet without sacrificing their most promising future talent.
Williams concludes that the acquisition of Crochet could fill the ace void in Boston’s rotation, which has been an issue due to Chris Sale’s injuries and other challenges. Combined with additional spending, potential trades, and the arrival of their top prospects, this move could set the Red Sox up for success in the short term while continuing to build for the future. Meanwhile, the White Sox would benefit from adding young talent to their rebuilding roster.
