BREAKING NEWS: Broncos Expected To Trade And Acquire Backup QBs in Exchange

With the NFL trade deadline approaching on November 5, the Denver Broncos could soon receive inquiries about both of their backup quarterbacks.

This situation presents a favorable dilemma.

On October 9, both Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson might be traded before the deadline. He noted, “The Broncos have a surplus at the position, allowing them to keep a strong backup regardless of any trades.” Wilson, currently third on the depth chart, appears to be the most likely to be moved. Coach Sean Payton has expressed enthusiasm about working with the 25-year-old since his acquisition in April, and Wilson’s $1.055 million salary is significantly lower than Stidham’s $4.49 million. Fowler mentioned that Denver could engage in discussions with several teams in need of quarterbacks, potentially leading to a trade of one of Bo Nix’s backups, depending on how those talks unfold.

Wilson has been a sought-after trade option throughout the season, acting as the team’s emergency third quarterback. However, Stidham may be an even more appealing choice for teams looking for a solid backup or temporary starter.

The Carolina Panthers could be a leading candidate, especially if they decide to trade their 2023 No. 1 overall pick, Bryce Young, before the deadline. The New Orleans Saints might also be interested, depending on the severity of Derek Carr’s injury. Additionally, the Los Angeles Rams, who are aiming for the playoffs, might seek a stronger backup than Stetson Bennett.

Broncos QB Jarrett Stidham Will Start Preseason Finale vs. Cardinals

Stidham has proven to be a highly dependable backup over six seasons with three different teams, which could make him a more attractive option than Wilson, even if his performance hasn’t necessarily outshone Wilson’s.

The Broncos have an unexpected and valuable asset in third-string quarterback Zach Wilson, the former No. 2 overall pick from 2021.

If they can find another team interested in Wilson, it could help them recover the 2024 sixth-round pick they used to acquire him from the New York Jets during the offseason, along with a seventh-round pick.

General manager George Paton has expressed confidence that Wilson will eventually become a starter again in the NFL.

“He has all the traits of a starting quarterback. He’s still working through some things,” Paton stated in late August, according to the Denver Gazette. “You could see his potential in the game against the Cardinals. He has one of the best throwing abilities in the league… I truly believe he’ll be a starter again.”

Among the five quarterbacks selected in the first round of 2021, only Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 pick and current quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars, remains with his original team, having signed a massive five-year, $275 million contract extension in June 2024. Wilson, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones are now with different teams in 2024, while the No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance, was traded to the Dallas Cowboys prior to the 2023 season.
