BREAKING NEWS: Blue jays GM Ross Atkins exerting pressure on Vladimir Guerrero Jr for the Jays first offseason mistake

The Toronto Blue Jays have been out of playoff contention for a while, with Ross Atkins and the front office focusing on the future. Recently, reports about a less-than-ideal clubhouse experience have surfaced, casting a negative light on both the veteran players and manager John Schneider. However, one player who isn’t part of the problem is Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Vladdy is under contract through the end of the 2025 season, but a contract extension is on Atkins’ agenda for this winter, assuming things go well. Guerrero Jr. holds significant leverage in those discussions, boasting an impressive .324/.398/.552 batting line for a .990 OPS. If the Blue Jays were more competitive, there would likely be more buzz around a potential MVP campaign for Vladdy, but for now, it seems the award will go to either Aaron J.

Guerrero Jr. has mostly played first base this season, and the results have been impressive, as reflected in his stats. He even won a Gold Glove at that position in 2022. Vladdy has concentrated on his hitting, a skill he has refined over the years. So, why change a successful formula? That’s exactly the question Atkins should consider as Guerrero Jr. contemplates a permanent move to third base.

“Obviously we haven’t decided yet,” Guerrero Jr. said through interpreter Hector Lebron. “If the decision is for me to move to third base to help the team, I’m on board with that. I’ll work hard at third base… But ultimately, whatever the team needs, I’ll give 100 percent.”

That last statement is crucial, as the team’s free-agent and trade decisions this winter could influence where they need Guerrero Jr. to play. Whether he ends up at either corner infield position or even as a designated hitter is still uncertain, but first base appears to be the best long-term fit for him if he secures that extension. If he doesn’t, it might be wise for him to demonstrate his skills at third base before exploring his market value.

The Blue Jays might consider signing either Christian Walker or Pete Alonso this winter, both experienced first basemen who could take Guerrero’s spot. Given this possibility, it’s promising that he’s open to a move back to third base, although it could weaken the team’s defense at that position.
