The Denver Broncos added two linebackers to their practice squad on Wednesday who were Alabama high school standouts and have made numerous tackles in their NFL careers.
The Broncos added Kwon Alexander from Oxford and Zach Cunningham from Pinson Valley after putting inside linebacker Alex Singleton on injured reserve with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. Singleton will be out for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in Sunday’s 26-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Alexander and Cunningham had been unrestricted free agents since March 13.
Players on the practice squad do everything that players on the active roster do except play in games – with this exception: Each team can elevate two practice-squad members to active status for each game.
Alexander is returning from a ruptured Achilles tendon, which ended his 2023 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers
on Nov. 12. Before the injury, Alexander played in nine games, with two starts, for the Steelers. He had 41 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and one forced fumble in 2023.
Cunningham played in 13 games, with 10 starts, for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. He had 85 tackles, two tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and four pass breakups last season.
After recording 144 tackles and 17 sacks for Oxford as a junior, Alexander was a finalist for the High School Butkus Award, an ESPN All-American team member and an Under Armour All-American Game participant in 2011, even though he missed most of the season with a knee injury
In 104 NFL regular-season games, with 88 starts, Alexander has recorded 631 tackles, 54 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, nine interceptions, 34 pass breakups, 12 forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries.
At Pinson Valley, Cunningham earned All-State recognition as a linebacker in 2011 and 2012 and received the Class 5A Lineman of the Year Award in 2012, when he made 197 tackles, including 41 behind the line of scrimmage, and blocked four punts.
In 2016, Cunningham became Vanderbilt’s first unanimous All-American. He also was the Commodores’ first consensus All-American in 32 years.
Cunningham, a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, led the league with 164 tackles and 106 solo tackles in 2020 for the Houston Texans.
Cunningham has made 705 tackles, 31 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, one interception, 23 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries in 95 NFL regular-season games, including 86 starts.
The Denver Broncos will meet the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, at 12:00 CDT on Sunday.
