Red Sox head groundskeeper Dave Mellor is set to retire on Sunday following the team’s final game of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park.
Mellor has dedicated 23 years to the Red Sox and boasts a total of 39 years in Major League Baseball. His experience includes stints with the Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants, and then-California Angels.
He also spent eight years caring for the iconic Lambeau Field for the Green Bay Packers.
“With mixed emotions, I’m stepping back from my daily duties as Senior Director of Grounds for the Boston Red Sox,” Mellor announced on social media just before Saturday’s game against the Rays.
“I’m excited to give back to the industry and support causes I care about while spending time with my family and dogs. It’s been an honor and a privilege to work in MLB for 39 years.”
Before Sunday’s game, Boston manager Alex Cora commended Mellor for his dedication in maintaining Fenway’s grass, particularly after the numerous concerts held at the ballpark throughout the year.
“We put in a lot of effort, that’s for sure,” Cora said. “No one works harder than he does. Consider all the concerts—while we’re on the road, there could be five concerts here. And somehow, that field is ready just six days later. It’s incredible.”
