Due to a damaged patellar tendon, offensive tackle Trent Brown of the Cincinnati Bengals was taken off the field during Monday Night Football in Week 3. NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed on Tuesday morning that he would need season-ending surgery to fix the ailment. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bengals officially announced it on Saturday by putting Brown on injured reserve.
Amarius Mims, an offensive tackle from the University of Georgia who was selected in the first round of the 2024 draft by Cincinnati, will be asked to replace Brown. At 6’8″ and 340 pounds, he is the 18th overall pick. Despite being viewed as a developmental prospect, he already possesses the physical attributes necessary to compete at this level.
Despite the Bengals’ 0-3 record, Joe Burrow is off to a strong start in the new season. For 746 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions, Burrow has completed passes. It has also not been a problem to protect Burrow, particularly in comparison to previous years. With just 13 QB pressures allowed thus far this season, the Bengals rank third in the NFL.
A few of Burrow’s defense metrics are more indicative of his readiness and ability to survive on his own. He is a master at reading defenses, spotting blitzes, and locating hot routes. Thus, even though Mims is still developing as a pass-protector, the Bengals are fortunate to have a quarterback with above-average pocket sense.
The pass protection of running back Chase Brown, who is still figuring out how to identify the free man, has been one area of worry. The Bengals would want to see him play more offensively, but because he almost entirely plays running, his presence on the field frequently gives the opposition an advantage.
