Ja’Marr Chase, a wide receiver with the Cincinnati Bengals, was fined heavily by the NFL for his behavior during the team’s Week 2 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. In the midst of an intensely passionate game between AFC rivals, with the Bengals trailing the Chiefs by a point in the fourth quarter, Chase was clearly frustrated after a tackle.
The NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that the league penalized Chase $31,599 for using “abusive” language.
The NFL fined #Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase $31,599 for unsportsmanlike conduct — screaming at referee Alex Kemp, who flagged Chase for abusive language.

For his unsportsmanlike behavior, Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase was fined $31,599 by the NFL. Referee Alex Kemp had previously warned Chase for using foul language. Trent McDuffie made a hip-drop tackle that Chase wanted flagged, but he wasn’t fined or flagged.
Before the 2024 season, the hip-drop tackle was outlawed by the league. This season, a number of offensive players have reported being the victim of an illegal tackle, including Chase.
Houston Texans thought that the injury that running back Joe Mixon suffered in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears was caused by a hip-drop tackle.
Compared to Mixon, Chase’s response was more erratic. Chase will receive a heavy fine from the league for his actions during the game. This weekend, the league issued most of the fines, which range from $5,000 to $15,000. On Monday night, Chase and the Bengals (0-2) will take on the Washington Commanders.
