Manager Alex Cora acknowledges that the situation with the Red Sox is bleak as the MLB regular season comes to a close.

After losing their series opener in Tampa Bay on Tuesday, the Red Sox fell below .500 for the first time since June 11. They have gone 8-16 in their last 24 games and started Wednesday five games behind the final American League wild-card spot, with only 11 games remaining.

Cora didn’t shy away from the team’s struggles after the recent loss.

It’s frustrating,” he told reporters at Tropicana Field, according to MLB.com. “We can be average, below average, or above average, and right now we’re below average. It’s not a lack of effort; things just aren’t going our way. Tonight was just a tough one.

At this stage, one could say the Red Sox are playing for pride. They also have an opportunity to be spoilers this weekend when they host the Minnesota Twins, who are still vying for a playoff spot.

In the meantime, Boston will continue its series in Tampa Bay on Wednesday, with NESN providing complete coverage of the middle game starting at 5:30 p.m. ET.
