LeBron James, a forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, has almost achieved everything the NBA can offer. James, who is starting his 22nd NBA season, broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record on February 7, 2023, to become the league’s all-time top scorer.
James’ 40th birthday falls during the 2023–24 NBA season, raising questions over whether or not it will be his final one. James will realize his dream this season of playing with his son, Bronny James, after declaring for years that this would be the greatest accomplishment of his NBA career. The Lakers selected Bronny with the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft, marking the first instance of a father-son team playing together in the league.
While playing with his son is LeBron’s self-proclaimed biggest NBA achievement, he is not expected to retire after this upcoming season.

James’ impending NBA retirement was clearly updated by Lakers reporter Dave McMenamin during an appearance on ESPN’s NBA Today on September 13. “LeBron signed an extension this summer where he only has one year guaranteed,” McMenamin stated. “However, I wouldn’t begin to believe that the Lakers’ season is about to end and that he will have to walk away from the team and retire because of their struggles.
McMenamin went on, “I think we’re all going to know when it’s LeBron’s last march—possibly his final march instead of the Last Dance. Everyone will find out, and it will be an essential television show. The LeBron tour is scheduled to visit all 28 NBA locations, ending in a magnificent farewell.” It is reasonable to believe that James’ upcoming season in the NBA won’t be his last because he hasn’t stated as much. There will be a “spectacular farewell” for James instead of an announcement of retirement at the end of the season, as McMenamin described it.
