On Sunday, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tony Gonsolin made his second rehab start of the season for Triple-A Oklahoma City, but it didn’t go as smoothly as his first.
Gonsolin pitched 2.2 innings before being replaced by Joe Kelly. During his outing, he gave up five hits, two earned runs, and one walk, while striking out three batters.
His initial rehab start took place on September 10, where he pitched two innings, allowing two hits but no earned runs or walks, and recorded three strikeouts. Overall, combining both starts, Gonsolin has a 3.86 ERA.
The Dodgers are still unsure whether Tony Gonsolin will be able to return to the team this season. They had initially expected him to miss the entire year following Tommy John surgery late in the 2023 season.
Gonsolin had his worst major league season in 2023, struggling with forearm inflammation throughout the year. Despite a strong start with a 1.77 ERA through May and four starts with no earned runs, his performance deteriorated over the summer, as he frequently allowed four or more earned runs per game.
His season ended after his last MLB start on August 18, 2023, where he lasted just 3.1 innings, giving up eight hits, ten earned runs, and four walks, with only two strikeouts. He was placed on the injured list, finishing the season with an 8-5 record, a 4.98 ERA, and 82 strikeouts.
In contrast, Gonsolin had the best season of his career in 2022, going 16-1 across a career-high 24 starts. He achieved a career-high 119 strikeouts and a 2.14 ERA, earning his first All-Star Game appearance.

Sunday also marked the second rehab appearance for relief pitcher Joe Kelly. In this outing for Triple-A Oklahoma City, Kelly pitched one inning, during which he allowed no hits, runs, or walks and recorded two strikeouts. His previous rehab appearance on Thursday was nearly identical, except he struck out one batter instead of two.
Kelly was placed on the injured list again on August 30, this time on the 15-day IL due to inflammation in his right shoulder, marking his second stint on the IL
