Major League Baseball has announced that Marcus Stroman has been selected as the New York Yankees’ nominee for the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award.

The Roberto Clemente Award is presented annually to the Major League player who exemplifies the spirit of baseball through outstanding character, community service, philanthropy, and positive impact both on and off the field.

Each MLB team nominates one player for this league-wide accolade, celebrating Clemente’s legacy and principles.

Stroman expressed his gratitude, stating, “I’m deeply honored to be nominated for such a distinguished award. This recognition reflects not just my own efforts but also the support of my team in our community initiatives. It’s fulfilling to assist those in need and be a role model for others, especially young people. I’m fortunate to be in a position where I can contribute and inspire the next generation to give back when they reach a certain level in their lives.”

Stroman has consistently demonstrated his commitment to philanthropy throughout his career, with this being the third time he has been nominated for the award, previously with the Chicago Cubs in 2023 and the Toronto Blue Jays in 2017.

Next Sunday, September 15, will be the 23rd annual Roberto Clemente Day, a tradition established by Major League Baseball to celebrate Clemente’s legacy as a humanitarian and to recognize the nominees for the Roberto Clemente Award from each club. The day’s observance will feature the Roberto Clemente Day logo on bases and official dugout lineup cards, and a special tribute video highlighting Clemente’s legacy and the 30 nominees (available in both English and Spanish) will be shown in all MLB ballparks, on MLB Network, MLB.com, MLB.tv, team websites, and MLB’s social media channels.

The Roberto Clemente Award winner will be announced during the 2024 World Series, following the selection by a distinguished panel. This panel consists of representatives from the Commissioner’s Office, MLB-affiliated networks (MLB Network, FOX Sports, ESPN, and TBS), MLB.com, the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Capital One, and Roberto Clemente’s children: Enrique, Luis, and Roberto Clemente, Jr. Starting today, fans can vote for the award via MLBTogether.com/clemente21 (available in English and Spanish). The site, which will provide biographies of each nominee, will accept votes until the end of the season on Sunday, September 29. The fan vote will contribute one vote towards the final selection by the panel.

The practice of honoring Major League players for their philanthropic efforts began in 1971 under the name “Commissioner’s Award” and was renamed the “Roberto Clemente Award” in 1973 to honor Clemente after his passing.
