OFFICIAL: Cowboys Quarterback Who Is A Trade Option For A Hard Hit AFC Contender

While the major story of the week from The Star was the significant contract extension given to Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott who essentially got everything he wanted from the team—another aspect of the situation involves the future of the rest of the Cowboys’ quarterback roster, particularly Trey Lance.

Lance was acquired last August after the Cowboys traded a fourth-round pick to the 49ers. His arrival was partly intended to add leverage in negotiations with Prescott, who had a subpar 2022 season and needed to prove himself in 2023. Prescott did just that, leading the NFL in passing yards, guiding the Cowboys to a 12-5 record, and finishing as a runner-up for NFL MVP.

Despite the Cowboys giving Lance plenty of chances this summer, it was evident that the 2021 No. 3 overall pick was not a viable long-term replacement for Prescott. This realization partly forced the Cowboys to agree to the Prescott extension.

Not only did Lance fail to pose a serious threat to Prescott’s position, but he also did not surpass Cooper Rush as the backup quarterback. However, the Cowboys might still have a chance to recover some value from Lance by potentially striking a deal with the Dolphins, who could be in a desperate situation.

As things stand, the Cowboys have no choice but to keep Lance on the roster until his contract’s remaining $5.3 million expires. To no one’s surprise, the Cowboys declined to pick up his fifth-year options last winter, and he has never played a down for Dallas in the regular season.

Lance has four games of starting experience and a 2-2 record. His greatest performance occurred in Week 16 of the 2021 season, when he threw for 249 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in a victory over Houston.
