BREAKING NEWS: New York Rangers Sigh This Excellent forward To A Professional Tryout

Erne spent the previous season with the Edmonton Oilers organization, dividing his time between the NHL and their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. A native of New Haven, Connecticut, Erne earned a one-year contract with the Oilers after being invited to their camp on a PTO.

During the regular season, Erne appeared in 24 games for the Oilers, recording one goal and one assist, with his sole goal scored on December 21 against the New Jersey Devils. In 36 games with the Condors, the former Quebec Rempart tallied six goals and six assists and participated in two of the team’s Calder Cup Playoff games last spring.

The Oilers were Erne’s third NHL team. Drafted in the second round, 33rd overall, by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2013 NHL Draft, he spent only one full season with them, frequently playing with their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. Erne became a regular NHL player following a trade to the Detroit Red Wings in August 2019, where he played for four seasons before becoming a free agent after the 2022-23 season.

In 379 NHL games, Erne has accumulated 43 goals and 50 assists but has only appeared in three Stanley Cup Playoff games—during the first round of the 2019 playoffs, when the Lightning were swept by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

It will be intriguing to see how Erne fits into the Rangers’ roster for training camp. The team already has several depth wingers signed for the upcoming season, including Will Cuylle, Jimmy Vesey, and Matt Rempe, and has limited cap space. With 46 of 50 contracts filled, the Rangers have just under $700,000 available, according to CapWages.
