BREAKING NEWS: Maple Leafs $1.47 million Free Agent Trade

The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially signed free agent defenseman Jani Hakanpaa following injury concerns that emerged in July.

After months of uncertainty about his ability to compete in the 2024-25 season, it seems Jani Hakanpaa has been cleared of any health issues. The Maple Leafs confirmed today that they have secured him on a one-year deal valued at $1.47 million.

On July 1st, the Maple Leafs and Jani Hakanpaa announced a two-year contract agreement, but the deal was not officially filed with the National Hockey League. Hakanpaa had sustained a knee injury towards the end of the 2023-24 season that required surgery, raising concerns about his readiness for this season, which likely led to the contract not being finalized.

During his time with the Dallas Stars last season, the native of Kirkkonummi, Finland, played 64 games, recording 12 points (two goals, ten assists), 33 penalty minutes, and a plus-ten rating.
