The New York Yankees have not yet confirmed whether outfielder Jasson Domínguez will be one of their two call-ups when MLB rosters expand from 26 to 28 players on Sunday, September 1.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone remained non-committal when asked about Domínguez, saying, “I don’t know. We’ll see, as reported by The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner. “We haven’t made that decision, so I don’t know.”
Domínguez, 21, had a promising start last season with an eight-game stint before an elbow injury required Tommy John surgery. He hit .258/.303/.677 (157 OPS+) with four home runs and seven RBIs. After returning in May, he was sidelined for over a month due to an oblique injury. This season, he has played 48 minor-league games, batting .309/.366/.489 with eight home runs and 27 RBIs across three levels.
Despite his strong performance in the minors, Domínguez has only appeared in one big-league game this season, as the designated 27th player during the Little League Classic, where he went 0-for-4.
Domínguez could potentially offer an offensive upgrade over veteran Alex Verdugo, who had an 83 OPS+ entering Friday. However, the Yankees are considering factors such as preserving Domínguez’s rookie status for the 2025 season, which could make him eligible for the Rookie of the Year Award and benefit the team with a draft pick, according to MLB’s Bryan Hoch.
Regardless of Domínguez’s status, the Yankees are expected to use one of the roster expansion spots to activate first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who has been out since June 16 due to an arm fracture.
