BREAKING NEWS: Tigers Player Back And Penciled In For Friday Start

After completing a bullpen session on Tuesday, Mize met with manager A.J. Hinch, who described the session as “a success” and noted that it puts Mize in a position to be ready for a decision.

It seems likely that Mize will return to face the Red Sox on Friday, which is the first day he’s eligible to come off the 60-day injured list.

We expect that to happen,  Hinch said.  I don’t know how much clearer I can be about it. We’re just waiting because that’s when we can activate him. We won’t have a starter listed until Friday.

This potential return would be six days after Mize’s last rehab outing with Triple A Toledo, where he struck out seven Iowa Cubs over 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. He registered 10 swinging strikes on 25 splitters and five on 15 sliders in that game. Mize has been working on improving his slider during his rehab to better prepare for facing Major League hitters again.

I’ve made some adjustments to my mindset and grip,  Mize explained.  The pitch itself may not be moving much differently, but it’s coming out of my hand in a way that should make it more effective. I hope this improvement translates well at the Major League level.”

Before his stint on the injured list at the end of June, Mize had a 2-6 record with a 4.23 ERA in 16 starts for Detroit. While he’s eager to end the season positively for himself, his main goal is to support the Tigers as they push through the remainder of the season.

I’m hoping to contribute to a team that’s been on a winning streak and help them continue that,  Mize said.  That’s the most important thing.
