BREAKING NEWS: Dodgers Star Is Poised To Join The Astros Following His Release

Veteran outfielder Jason Heyward is reportedly nearing a deal with the Houston Astros after being designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. Although Heyward hasn’t met expectations in 2024, he had a strong 2023 season with LA. While he could have been a good fit for various teams, it looks like he’ll be joining the Dodgers’ rivals.

Dodgers fans are unlikely to be pleased with the prospect of Heyward signing with Houston. Many still harbor resentment toward the Astros due to their 2017 scandal, which resulted in a World Series win over the Dodgers. Even manager Dave Roberts has publicly criticized the Astros.

Despite the situation, Dodgers fans shouldn’t hold Heyward responsible. The decision to designate him for assignment was made by LA, and Heyward simply wants to keep playing baseball, with Houston offering him that chance.

 

 

 

What Jason Heyward Brings to the Astros?

If the deal is finalized, Heyward will bring valuable veteran experience to the Astros. This Houston roster differs from their previous championship teams, and adding a seasoned player like Heyward could benefit their current lineup.

At 35, Heyward is a versatile outfielder capable of playing any outfield position. With Kyle Tucker dealing with an injury, the Astros will benefit from the additional depth Heyward provides.

Heyward was once a candidate for MVP early in his career and has also won five Gold Glove Awards. Although he is not the player he used to be, he still has the ability to make a positive contribution to a successful team.

In 2024, Heyward has posted a line of .208/.289/.393/.682 over 63 games. However, in 2023, he batted .269 with an .813 OPS. A fresh start might help him return to the level he showed in 2023.
