Though Juan Soto is off the market, the New York Yankees and New York Mets remain locked in a heated competition to strengthen their rosters.
According to a report from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon on Monday night, both teams are among those vying for Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet. The 25-year-old left-hander is coming off a breakout season and is under team control for two more years, making him a prime trade target likely to fetch a significant return for Chicago. The Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox are also in the mix, but the Mets and Yankees have been the most aggressive pursuers.
The Mets boast superior prospect depth, with young talents like Jett Williams, Luisangel Acuña, and Brett Baty potentially enticing the White Sox, who are seeking young bats. On the other hand, the Yankees have valuable outfield prospects such as Jasson Dominguez, Spencer Jones, and George Lombard Jr. to offer.
Drafted 11th overall by the White Sox in 2020, Crochet has dealt with injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2022. After returning to the mound late in 2023, he delivered his first full MLB season as a starter in 2024, posting a 6-12 record with a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 209 strikeouts across 146 innings. Notably, he exceeded his previous highest innings total by over 90. While Crochet’s potential is immense, his injury history adds a layer of risk, further driving up the asking price.
The Mets, fresh off signing Soto to a 15-year, $765 million contract, are clearly all-in on their ambitions. Meanwhile, the Yankees are eager to make a statement after missing out on Soto. It’s no surprise that these two rivals are once again in fierce contention for a top-tier talent.
