The Philadelphia Phillies are set to be one of the most exciting teams to watch this winter.
After finishing with 95 wins in 2024, the Phillies have the talent to replicate that success in 2025. With the right additions, they could make a deeper postseason run next year. One area they are likely to target is pitching, and ESPN’s Buster Olney lists them as a top contender to land Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet in a major trade.
Olney mentioned that the Phillies almost acquired Crochet in July but couldn’t finalize the deal due to reluctance in including pitcher Andrew Painter, a top prospect. Painter, now 21, is recovering from Tommy John surgery and recently impressed in the Arizona Fall League with a 2.08 ERA over five starts.
Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is known for leading a win-now team, and with key players like Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler, Trea Turner, and Aaron Nola all in their prime, the urgency to add another top pitcher is clear. Additionally, with J.T. Realmuto, Kyle Schwarber, and Ranger Suarez heading into free agency next year, Dombrowski has a limited window to push for a championship. If the Phillies land Crochet, it could give them a formidable rotation, potentially featuring Wheeler, Nola, Jonathan Sanchez, Suarez, and Crochet.
At just 25 years old and with a projected salary of only $2.9 million in 2025, Crochet would be a major addition for Philadelphia. His first All-Star selection in 2024 shows he’s ready to make an impact, and this type of move could push the Phillies to the next level.
