Alabama’s chances to make the College Football Playoff under Kalen DeBoer are good, regardless of two losses, but are Crimson Tide fans growing impatient with DeBoer?
The Alabama Crimson Tide staff felt like they hit the jackpot when five-star quarterback Keelon Russell committed to the program.
Russell, the third-ranked recruit in the 2025 class, has already established a strong reputation before even stepping onto a college field. He has set impressive passing records in high school and has averaged nearly two touchdowns per game throughout his career. Now, the five-star quarterback is optimistic about stepping into a starting position with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The recruit was recently on The Momentum Podcast and spoke about his relationship with the Crimson Tide staff. Russell stated during the podcast that he feels “like I be QB1 already” given the conversations he has been having with the staff.
Russell also remarked, “When Coach Sheridan and I go over film, it’s just smooth sailing.” The quarterback has built a strong rapport with the coaching staff in a short period, which is a positive sign for the program.
As some other programs have seen this year, the benefit of developing a relationship with an athlete as the athlete grows is difficult to replace in the transfer portal.
With the quarterback situation for the Alabama Crimson Tide looking open next season, Keelon Russell could potentially take charge of the offense.
As starting quarterback Jalen Milroe is expected to depart, the Alabama coaching staff is strategizing for the upcoming season. Without Russell in the mix, Ty Simpson would likely step into the starting role. However, Russell’s dynamic abilities could make it difficult to keep him off the field.
Standing at 6 feet 3 inches, Russell might be the best choice to lead the Crimson Tide next season for several reasons. First, his height makes him the second tallest quarterback in the room, behind Austin Mack, who is 6 feet 6 inches. Russell’s stature, along with his playing style, closely resembles that of Milroe, facilitating a smooth transition into the offense.
Additionally, Russell’s football acumen sets him apart. Despite being a freshman, he hails from Duncanville High School in Texas, known for its exceptional development of elite players. The idea of Russell joining the team and quickly adapting to the collegiate level is certainly within reach.
