The Washington Commanders are managing some injury issues at quarterback. Rookie QB Jayden Daniels suffered a left rib injury in the first quarter of their game against the Carolina Panthers, forcing him to leave the game and head to the locker room.
On Monday, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn shared an update on Daniels’ condition.
“Jayden’s status is week to week,” Quinn stated. “We’ll take him through the necessary steps in practice, keep an eye on his progress, and proceed cautiously. We’re hopeful he’ll be able to play, but his well-being comes first.” Quinn also mentioned that Daniels has not been ruled out for the Week 8 game against the Chicago Bears, adding that his progress will be assessed daily.
Daniels sustained the rib injury during Washington’s decisive 40-7 victory over Carolina. Initially labeled as questionable to return, he was later downgraded to out. After leading an 85-yard drive that ended with a field goal, Daniels left the field visibly in pain. He received a brief evaluation in the medical tent, tried some sideline throws, but eventually headed to the locker room.
Veteran QB Marcus Mariota took over with Washington leading 10-0 and helped extend the lead to 27-0 by halftime. Daniels reappeared on the sideline in sweats during the second half, smiling and waving to fans as the Commanders maintained control.
Before his injury, Daniels completed 2 of 2 passes for six yards and rushed for 50 yards. This season, Daniels has accumulated 1,410 passing yards, six touchdowns, two interceptions, 372 rushing yards, and four rushing touchdowns. Among rookies, he leads the NFL with a 75.6% completion rate and a 107 passer rating.
