A year after receiving a significant off-field suspension, promising prospect Brainer Bonaci has parted ways with the Red Sox organization.
The 22-year-old infielder, who had been climbing the prospect rankings after advancing to Double-A during a strong 2023 season, was released by the team, as indicated by transaction records. This announcement follows Bonaci’s suspension for the entire 2024 season due to a violation of the minor league’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy. The specific details surrounding the suspension have not been disclosed.
The Red Sox signed Bonaci as an international free agent from Venezuela in 2018 for $290,000. By 2023, he was gaining significant attention as a prospect, further boosting his status with a .297 batting average, 18 doubles, 11 home runs, and an .818 OPS in 79 games between High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland. Interestingly, in August, while playing in Portland, he was placed on the reserve list and sent back to Venezuela, which an industry source referred to as “administrative leave.” He was later reinstated to participate in the Arizona Fall League but played only two games before being placed on the restricted list by Major League Baseball for violating the policy. As a result, he was suspended for the entire 2024 season.
At the end of last season, both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline ranked Bonaci as the No. 11 prospect in the Red Sox organization.
